New method uses DNA biomarkers to flag prenatal environmental exposures in children

New method uses DNA biomarkers to flag prenatal environmental exposures in children
Scientists at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health developed a method using a DNA biomarker to easily screen pregnant women for harmful prenatal environmental contaminants like air pollution linked to childhood illness and developmental disorders. This approach has the potential to prevent childhood developmental disorders and chronic illness through the early identification of children at risk.
While environmental factors including air pollutants have previously been associated with DNA markers, no studies to date have used DNA markers to flag environmental exposures in children. Study results are published online in the journal ....

New research examines how alcohol exposure impacts aspects of neuroplasticity

New research examines how alcohol exposure impacts aspects of neuroplasticity
New research and analysis examine how alcohol exposure impacts many aspects of neuroplasticity in a special issue of
Brain Plasticity
Neuroplasticity, the remarkable ability of the brain to modify and reorganize itself, is affected by or in response to excessive alcohol, whether through individual consumption or exposure in the womb.
It is now well accepted that the birth and integration of new neurons continue beyond development and into adulthood. New discoveries and insights on how alcohol impacts this and other plastic processes are discussed in Alcohol and Neural Plasticity, a special issue of ....

Updated spina bifida guidelines cover care across the entire lifespan

Updated spina bifida guidelines cover care across the entire lifespan
Globally, nearly 300,000 babies are born with neural tube defects including spina bifida (SB) each year. This openly available special issue of the
Journal of Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine (
JPRM) provides 20 important evidence- and consensus-based updates to key sections of the 2018 Guidelines for the Care of People with Spina Bifida issued by the Spina Bifida Association (SBA). These reflect current recommendations for the care of patients with SB across the entire lifespan, from prenatal counseling to adult care.
As a result of research advancements and improved team-based patient care, approximately 80%-90% of children with SB now live to adulthood in the United States. The Guidelines were written with this idea in mind and present the best evidence for what care should be delivered, regardless of the model or types of practitioners available. ....

Study implicates disruption in prenatal neurogenesis in the development of ASDs

Study implicates disruption in prenatal neurogenesis in the development of ASDs
A new study of autism risk genes by UC San Francisco and UC Berkeley scientists implicates disruption in prenatal neurogenesis - a process in which specialized progenitor cells give rise to new brain cells - in the development of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The study also shows that estrogen, perhaps in a form produced within brain cells, can protect against this disruption and steer the brain on a normal course of development.
The most striking findings in the study, published on January 25, 2021 in
Neuron, were derived from experiments using embryos of the western clawed frog (Xenopus tropicalis), a species prized by biologists for the unique insights it offers into development. Human genes involved in development have counterparts with similar functions in Xenopus, and extensive studies correlating human embryonic stages with those of the frog mean that genetic studies in Xenopu ....

Researchers identify new strategy to protect offspring from prenatal stress

Researchers identify new strategy to protect offspring from prenatal stress
New research from the University of Iowa and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center demonstrates that offspring can be protected from the effects of prenatal stress by administering a neuroprotective compound during pregnancy.
Working in a mouse model, Rachel Schroeder, a student in the UI Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Neuroscience, drew a connection between the work of her two mentors, Hanna Stevens, MD, PhD, UI associate professor of psychiatry and Ida P. Haller Chair of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Andrew A. Pieper, MD, PhD, a former UI faculty member, now Morley-Mather Chair of Neuropsychiatry at Case Western Reserve University and Investigator and Director of the Neurotherapeutics Center at the Harrington Discovery Institute, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. ....
